Summer Reading Club
Prizes will be given out until September 1.
Readers of all ages are invited to read and rock out at the Barberton Public Library this summer as part of our Libraries Rock! summer reading program. Highlights of the program include a presentation from Ironwood Wolves on the lives of wolves, a West African drum performance from Sogbety, magic and humor from Michael Mage and an amazing juggling performance from Matt Jergens. For a complete list of programs for school age children, please see our school age program page. Children ages 5 to 9 will also be able to rock out on a variety of topics including the beach, musical instruments, slime, gardens and the Earth. Babies, toddlers and preschoolers can join us for weekly storytime and craft programs too. A complete list of storytime sessions can be found here. Students entering grades 5 - 8 are invited to join us on Thursdays, from 1:00 – 2:30 pm, for hands-on fun and engaging summer tween programs. Programming will include a variety of activities and topics, and always, a snack! Some of the events we have planned include: a Book Tasting event, Volunteer Café, a Makershop, Karaoke, a Coding Adventure and a special program on Dry Ice with Mad Science of Northeast Ohio. For a complete list of tween programs, please see our Tween programming page. Children also can join us anytime for weekly crafts in the Children's Department. For a complete list of all these programs, please see the online calendar or pick up a calendar in the Children's Department.
Summer Reading Club begins June 2 and runs through August 11.
Participation in the Summer Reading Program has many benefits including: building pre-literacy and Kindergarten readiness in preschool children; motivating school-age children to read; developing positive attitudes about reading and books and helping children to maintain their reading skills during summer vacation. Parents of preschool aged children are welcome to sign-up their children with reading logs to track their child’s weekly readings. For every five days of reading you and your child do together, he or she can earn a prize! Completing at least seven other activities, like attending a library program or reciting nursery rhymes with your preschooler, will earn your child an extra prize. Children in kindergarten to fourth grade and Tweens in fifth through eighth grade are invited to track their reading by the hour. For every two hours they read, they will earn rewards. Children can earn a bookmark, a tattoo, a book bag, a coupon and books. Elementary age children can earn an additional prize by completing eight different activities listed on the back of the reading log, and Tweens can earn an additional prize by completing ten activities. Kids can pick-up their reading logs in the Children's Department starting June 2.
