FALL EDITION- SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, & NOVEMBER 2024 THE ENCHANTED TIMES The official newsletter of the Barberton Public Library. “When I got my library card, that was when my life began.” – Rita Mae Brown A Note from Our Director by Ann Hutchison IN THIS ISSUE SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH! PARDON OUR DUST! UPDATES ON OUR FIRST FLOOR RENOVATIONS. EVENTS & OTHER NEWS. A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR, ANN HUTCHISON. THE LIBRARY IS A GAME CHANGER! I love libraries. All libraries. It was in school and university libraries that I discovered a love of reading, how to do research, and the importance of volunteering, these things still drive me today. I have worked in a public library for more than half my life and have witnessed many changes. From card catalogs to computer catalogs, from book indexes to Google searches, from vinyl records to streaming services, there have always been two constants: the library serves everyone and the library is always adapting and transforming. Your Barberton Public Library is here for you and will continue to transform to meet the needs of our community. The last few years have seen fine-free checkouts, free faxing, passport and notary services. September will be a great time to stop by and get a library card or renew your existing card and “check-out” our new and existing services.

FALL EDITION- SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, & NOVEMBER 2024 Spooky Staff Picks With one of the best opening paragraphs in literature, We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson will have you questioning your own sanity as you dive into the depths of madness and immerse yourself in its eerie, horrifying tale. Shirley Jackson's chilling narrative pulls you into a world where psychological instability and dark secrets intertwine, leaving you utterly engrossed. This book is suited for those 18 and up. The novel’s atmosphere is thick with suspense and dread, making every page turn a journey deeper into the protagonist's troubled mind. As you navigate the Blackwood sisters' isolated existence and the unsettling dynamics of their interactions with the outside world, you may find yourself grappling with the blurred lines between reality and delusion. Jackson’s exploration of madness is both captivating and disturbing, ensuring that the story lingers in your thoughts long after you’ve turned the final page. A Dark Tale for Suspense Seekers. by Sam Kuikahi, Customer Services Manager The book I chose for this book review was Took: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn. This is a tween book geared towards children in fifth through seventh grade. (ages 9-11) However, even as an adult I found this book to be very interesting. Daniel and his family are forced to move from their nice large house in Connecticut to a run-down, beat-up old house in Woodville, West Virigina. When the family arrives at their new house in the middle of the night the creepy atmosphere makes Daniel and his sister, Erica, uncomfortable. Daniel swears someone, or something, is watching them. No, it couldn’t be, he was just imagining things because it was so dark and there were lots of wooded areas. But, Daniel suspects something weird is happening because not only is Erica talking to her doll, but she is also talking to something invisible in the woods. To find out what happens to Daniel, Erica, and their family, you must read this book. It is a spooky interesting tale, and you will get hooked! A Haunting Book for All Ages! by Lori Cochran, Children’s Services Librarian Looking for family-friendly Halloween movies? We have them. Loan them for free. Don’t pay scary streaming prices. How about classics or new horror films? We have them too. Come check out our movie selection.
FALL EDITION- SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, & NOVEMBER 2024 Revitalizing Our Spaces: First Floor Renovations by Josh Brickner, Fiscal Officer As we embark on our first-floor renovation over the next few months, we want to keep you, our valued patrons, updated on some of the alterations coming to the Library. The Library will still be open during the duration of our renovations, however, there will be significant differences that patrons should be aware of. As always, our staff will be happy to assist you through this transition. This project was budgeted for and approved due to the condition of shelving, carpeting, and interior of the Main Floor showing their age after over 20 years of use. A majority of the Main Floor has not undergone a full renovation since the 1980s. Simply, the area was not up to the high standards of service we strive to bring to our patrons, and needs to be refreshed to meet the growing needs of our community. These upcoming three months, you will notice some adjustments in services at the Library. Due to our renovations, certain areas of the Main Floor will be inaccessible to patrons. It is imperative for the safety of our patrons, staff, and the construction crew, that all patrons avoid all sanctioned off areas. Signage will be posted to inform patrons where they are permitted access. To ease this transition, the Library has planned accordingly so patrons will still have access to all of the usual Library services. We ask that patrons be patient with the library staff as we fine-tune these adjustments to best serve our community. Our programs will continue as usual, and patrons will not lose access to any of the standard services offered by the Library. 1980s Renovation
FALL EDITION- SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, & NOVEMBER 2024 The most notable change will include Library materials being transitioned to movable carts throughout the Main Floor, instead of in their usual place on the shelves. For the safety of our patrons, these carts will not be directly accessible to patrons. However, if you are in need of these carts’ contents, please notify one of our staff members and they will be happy to assist you. Another temporary change is the location of our public computers that are normally located on the main floor. To still allow our patrons’ access to this service, the public computers will be transitioned to the lobby for the duration of the project. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding in the next months. As mentioned previously, the Library has planned accordingly to give the best possible service to our patrons. Our staff will be here to assist you in any way through each step of this journey. Stay up to date with the latest updates to our services and renovations on the Library’s social media accounts and website. Once these needed renovations are complete, we look forward to welcoming you to the improved Main Floor of the Barberton Public Library.
